We have to keep going!” As April led the way in front of her, Elli wasn’t quite sure where it was they were going. They had traveled a long way from April’s home in Iolite City. To say that they were already Scapoilite City would mean one thing. Well, of course they hitchhiked. There was no other way they would have possibly ended up here so fast! Elli had to wonder what exactly it was April was planning to do now. She had a contest pass, so what now?
“Elli, normally people who wander around aimlessly like this find awesome Pokemon before contests, don’t they?” Elli froze, annoyed suddenly with the comment. April stopped and turned to look at her, before scooping the Elekid up and hugging her close to her.
“I’m sorry Elli! I wasn’t saying you weren’t awesome or anything, promise! It’s just…” April thought about it. Contests required more than one Pokemon, and that would mean, they’d need to find another team member. “It’s just that we can’t just be a duo during contests, we have to be a trio.” April explained, simply in her mind. That’s just how it was with contests, and she was sure it was the same way with battles too. Her loose strands of hair fell over her face as she peered into a hole that had been burrowed into the base of the mountain.
“Now I wonder what made that kind of hole….” Elli peered down it as well, and she kind of realized she didn’t really want to know. Blinking, she gave a huff and pulled up the strap of her bag.
“I don’t know a thing about this stuff Elli…I bet you a seasoned traveler would know what made that hole.” She commented. Elli didn’t seem to think the same thing, but moments later, April was back to normal anyway.
“I’m sure I’ll learn to do the same thing eventually! I mean it’s just a matter of…huh?” She stopped mid sentence and blinked as she spotted something glinting in the dirt. Leaning down, she placed Elli down and walked over to the object. Digging it out as Elli followed her, she held up a clear, pretty clear white rock with a purplish tint to it.
“Well, that doesn’t look quite like the mountain, does it Elli?”
Buzz… Elli agreed, stealing a look at the rock herself.

Travelling wasn't something Kodi had planned on doing very often. Still, he seemed to be doing it more and more every year. First, coming here to this region to escape the painful past he'd left behind in Sinnoh. Then again whenever it came time to buy more seeds for crops and berries for the spring. Then again, now, to find those damn Obelisk things for the old woman's bucket list. A little late, but still worth the journey, right? Right. One down. Three more to go.
He'd left his bike chained up outside a hotel in Scapolite City. He'd gotten there that morning, slept for a few hours and now he felt the need to explore, to see if one of those Obelisk things were anywhere nearby. Probably not, but it was worth the investigation. Besides, what man would stop to ask for directions in this day and age?
With both Blu and Yen walking along beside him, he felt comfortable in the strange area. He'd never visited Scapolite City before and this gave him a reason to keep his partners out of their balls for both safety and company. Neither Meowth nor Deino would argue- they liked the fresh air.
It was the sound of a voice that lured him on, only minutes into his exploration. So far, he'd seen no one around. The girl's voice was unexpected and intriguing. It wasn't the mean-spirited lady from his last stop, so maybe this time he'd actually find some good company? One could only hope.
The dark haired girl came into sight not long after, with her Elekid by her side. The two were examining something the girl was holding, as if they'd found a neat treasure. Curious and bored as usual, Kodi approached. Yen kept to his partner's side but Blue bounced ahead a few steps and let out a growl of warning, just in case either human or pokemon decided to be mean.
"Behave, Blu. Be nice." He scolded as he came to stand beside the defensive Deino. Yen padded up and sat down at his trainer's heel, meowing in greeting and earning a disapproving gesture from Blue. He paid her no mind.
"Afternoon, ladies." Kodi purred smoothly, sticking his hands into his pockets and hoping he'd guessed the elekid's gender right. "Nice day, yes?" Beside him, Yen lowered his head in a shamed gesture- what a stupid greeting. Blu paid no mind. Neither did Kodi. They were both used to the cat's judgement on everything they did. It meant he was feeling fine, after all.

April nearly jumped at the sound of a smooth voice behind her. Elli’s ear-like structure’s on the top of her head cackled with electricity, even though she couldn’t use her electric attacks yet. April heard the sound by her feet and looked down at her, holding the rock in one hand and using the other to shush her. Once Elli had quieted, down, April turned to face the man that the voice belonged too. A yellowish gaze was on her, and for a minute she was caught in in, before shaking free a moment later.
There was something in there though that she couldn’t very well read. She wondered what it might have been perhaps, but it wasn’t polite to asks a complete stranger about their life story, so she decided to move onto something else. This boy had two Pokemon, a Meowth and a Dieno. Maybe he was more experienced than her? Elli gently prodded her leg, and April was brought to the realization she had probably been staring at him for at least two minutes now.
“A-Ah, yes it is!” She said finally, now holding the rock with both hands, more firmly than she had been before. Looking up at the clear sky, she breathed in the crisp fresh air and let it out with a happy gasp.
“Actually, since it rained all last week, I can say I really missed the sun…” She commented. She looked down at the rock and held it out to him. It may have been nothing special, but maybe he’d want to see it.
“Did you want to see what we found? Elli and I just thought it looked really cool, because it doesn’t look the same as the rest of the rocks around here…” She offered him a smile, before realizing something.
“Oh hey… I guess you can’t just take offers from strangers huh?...” Seeming to have an idea, she added “Well I guess I’ll just have to tell you my name! I’m April, and this is my Elekid, Elli!” she mentioned, motioning to Elli, who gave the man and his Pokemon a friendly wave.

The long moment of her just staring reminded him that not everyone was as quick to converse as he could be at times. Instead of acting awkward or weirded out about it, he smiled and cocked his hip slightly, waiting patiently and politely for her to get her head together. It was her elekid who snapped her out of it after a minute or so and he had to hide a smirk of amusement. Cute.
And then came the awkward rambling. He'd obviously caught her off guard. It only served to make her appeal to him, in an odd kind of way. Those that rambled when caught off guard were generally honest and good-natured, something he'd learned on the road.
When finally she held out her hand to offer him the treasure she'd found, for him to look at, he held out his hand to take it for a closer look. A fancy rock? Sounded kinda interesting, with how she described it. He looked up from it as she made introductions and returned his hand to his pocket, letting her keep hold of the stone. He'd seen enough and indeed, it was pretty and unique.
"A pleasure to meet you both, April and Elli. My name's Kodiak." He waved his hand towards himself, than to each of his pokemon, starting with the meowth. "These are Yen and Blu. Yen's good to touch, but Blu bites, so be careful." All Deinos had a habit of biting. It was in their nature. Hopefully she'd understand.
Yen purred in welcome, doing his best to mimic a smile. He glanced down at Elli after 'greeting' April with the same 'smile, purring a hello to her. Blu sat back with a stern air about her, not at all trusting anything about either girl- Kodi was hers and Yen's. These two bimbos could back off.
"What brings you all the way out here? It's an awful long walk back to the City. Are you a trainer?" His smile was meant to be disarming, though he didn't intend to make her uncomfortable. If she had any defenses at all to guys like him, he wanted her to keep them down or away. She seemed nice and a good friend was always welcomed, especially seeing that her Elli got along with her so well. A good sign indeed.

April smiled back and leaned down after placing the pretty rock into her bag. She offered the same friendly smile to Yen, reaching out to pet him for a moment before pulling her hand back, allowing Elli to greet Yen with a warm buzz of hello. Though, April did manage to steal a glance at Blu, who seemed to want nothing to do with her or Elli. She seemed like her territory, or property, or something, was being threatened. The girl took a shaky breath and managed to stand back up to face Kodiak again.
“Mmm…Do you mind if I just call you Kodi? I mean, formalities and all are a nice thing, but you’re name a is a bit much for someone like me to be saying fully all the time…” It took her maybe a minute to understand what she had just implied herself, but once she caught on, she went into another hurried ramble.
“Oh! N-Not that your name isn’t nice or anything, I just have trouble calling people by their full names, and people who barley know me normally call me Pri-Pri anyway so I have that tendancy to ask….” She explained, rubbing the back of her head sheepishly. She must have looked like such a boy though, she was pretty surprised Kodiak hadn’t mistook her for one. She let one of her hand brush down her short black hair as it retracted to the side of her t-shirt, and she decided she had better move on for the moment.
“A Trainer? Oh no, I’m a bit too skittish for that… too much going on, I’m always afraid I’m going to get hit, or that a Pokemon might die or something…I heard that’s happened once, and it terrifies me! I’m actually a Coordinator, but… it was mostly because my mom made me… I do like combining moves and making them shine but…it’s just the battles I’m afraid of. I thought maybe being a breeder would be better, but my little sister Momo asked me not to steal her dream, so, it was a coordinator or sit at home with my mom’s Delcatty.” She explained, moving on to the next part of the question.
“I came out here because someone told me there would be plenty of room to practice move combinations…but when I got here I realized that Elli isn’t ready for move combinations yet…which is why I kind of just gave up and thought we’d explore the mountain base a little bit… but, what are you doing out here? I’m sure you’re a bit more keen than I am when it comes to remembering something before you walk out this far to do something you can’t…well, at least you look it.” She mentioned. Well, looks could be deceiving, but April was sure normal people would have checked their Pokémon’s moves before going somewhere to train for appeals.

This girl talked a lot. Both boys decided it at almost the same time without showing it. Yen figured it could get annoying but tuning people out was easy. Kodi found it kind of charming, cute even. He waited until she was done answering him to speak, dealing with the first part of the ramble first. "I don't mind if you call me Kodi. Most people do, anyway." He smiled that disarming smile again before continuing.
She was a coordinator. Not the best job in the world, but she seemed to have the right idea about how to treat her pokemon. A breeder would've been her first pick- brownie points for that. "It's an easy mistake, April." He addressed the forgetfullness first, brushing it off with a shrug. "All it takes is a bit of training for an elekid to start using flashy moves, but it'll be worth it once she's got the hang of it. A couple good days of practice with a buddy and she'll be good to start training for a contest." He smiled down at Elli, with Yen meowing his agreement from the grass.
"As for why I'm out here..." Leaning back, those golden eyes moved to scan the area, smile softening in admiration of the view. "I'm on a bit of a treasure hunt. Oma wanted to see the Obelisks before she died but never got the chance to. I'm just fufilling her wish, as a way of showing my thanks to her for taking care of me." Personal, but not something he'd have any reason to hide. Besides, it played him off as charming and good-willed. What girl wouldn't like a guy like that, right?
"I'm not sure where they are. Never did much research before leaving. Really, it's an excuse for me to kill time before my ranch pass comes in." Reminded of the topic of jobs and how she'd wanted to be a breeder first, he turned to face her again with a smile. "I'm on my way to becoming a professional breeder, myself. I already have the farm lands for it and a steady income. Figured I'd give it a shot."

April looked down at Elli as Kodi explained to her that they’d probably become stronger. Well, of course she knew that, but that would sure take a while. Glancing at Yen, she thought she might be getting annoying, but Kodi didn’t seem to mind. Instead, he answered the question she had asked him. Obelisks? Were those the giant rock structures that Taemin had told her about once? She hopped right over that though when she realized why he was doing it. All for the sake of someone who had passed on? Even if she had taken care of him, it was very sweet.
“Well, I think it’s sweet of you, to come all the way out here to thank her like this…” she mentioned, but tilted her head to the sides.
“I just haven’t seen many Obelisks around here…only that rock…” she continued, a slight frown about her. Elli sighed. She wasn’t going to offer to help him find it, was she? They had training to do! April glanced down the hole they had been standing by again, and feeling unsettled, she backed away from it. Honestly, she had barley realized they were still standing anywhere near it. She had gone back to the fact that he mentioned he could support himself in his head.
“But..wow…farmlands and income…I still have to share a bathroom with my sister back home….” She mentioned, a blush forming on her face. The fact that they seemed to be about the same age embarrassed her. April, if only for a moment, revisited the darker side behind his amber golden eyes. She couldn’t pinpoint it, but behind that sweet look, especially when he mentioned Oma.
“You have the look of a breeder though, so I’m sure you’ll be great when your pass comes in!” She smiled before looking around. That hole still made her nervous, though she was positive it wasn’t any sort of burrow.
“Erm…Kodi? Do you think anything lives down there?” April asked, glancing at the hole. She thought maybe he’d know, maybe something similar burrowed around the farmlands that he mentioned once or something. Though if it was dangerous, maybe it would be a good idea for them to go back to town.

She gave the 'that's so sweet of you' response and he couldn't help but feel self-concious for a second. The old woman had saved him when he'd run away from his region; if it hadn't been for her, he would've starved for sure. Orphans with the rough-end-of-the-city look didn't really grant the appeal of many families. It had been pure luck that she'd taken pity on him when he'd come across her farm and tried to steal some fruit.
Enough of the past. He shook the thoughts away and listened as she mentioned the hole nearby. Glancing over at it, he sniffed. "Maybe. Probably a ground pokemon. Nothing to worry about as long as we don't pry, I'd say." He walked over to it and leaned sideways to get a better look inside. Darkness.
Nearby, Blu rumbled in warning. She knew something did live there. The scent gave that away. At the very least, it had been used recently. Knowing Kodi, he'd probably upset whatever could be inside just standing so close. Reckless child.
"Y'know, it'd be neat if something did live down there. It'd be good training for Elli if something came out and you went to catch it." His voice didn't match his words; matter of fact but not really into the idea. "I prefer a more friendly approach myself, but being a breeder, two pokemon are good enough for me that I don't need to go looking for more like trainers and coordinators do." He looked back at April and smiled.
"Come to think of it, Yen could use some training himself. If he's ever going to be a persian, he needs to gain a bit of experience in life, y'know?" Hands left his pockets and moved to cross behind his head, his back arching as he took a few steps around to face her. "Maybe they could practice together. Elli and Yen, just a friendly spar? There's a pokemon center in town if we need it, right?"
Yen listened intently to his partner's idea, then glanced over at Elli curiously. He'd never had to battle anyone before. He wondered if Elli ever had. In a show of approval, he purred over to her. 'Sounds like fun.'

April’s gray eyes went wide as she stared down the hole with Kodi, blinking as if to make sure she didn’t do something stupid, by keeping her vision focused. She listened to him speak, on how he kind of hoped something would pop up. As a new person out on the field, it made her stomach turn. Catch it?! What if it was too tough? She shivered a bit but she didn’t voice these thoughts. Instead, she listened to him speak of a battle, between her and Elli, and him and Yen.
‘Sounds well enough to me.’ Elli responded when Yen spoke. April was kind of excited, but her heart fluttered at the same time. Maybe a friendly battle with Kodi would calm her nerves about battling. She gained up an enthusiasm, and sprung up from her crouching position.
“That would be aweso- Whoa!” She leaned a bit too forwards and almost toppled in, turning her into the reckless kid, but Elli caught the edge of her tee and pulled her backwards, so she fell onto the floor in back of her rather than into the hole. She had given a small yelp before she had fallen, and held her tailbone for a minute. Finally, when she felt a bit better, she prepared to stand up.
“I’m all right! Man I’m so clumsy… I swear it’s like every other second I’m falling somewhere else.” She hoisted herself up to her feet and dusted off her pants lightly.

Seeing April damn near fall into the hole, Kodi's heart jumped into his throat. If something was down there and if Elli hadn't caught her, April could've been injured. Badly. Even without something down there, she might've hurt herself. At least she fell backwards instead. Had he been closer, he would've tried to catch her before she'd made impact with the ground. Sadly, he was a few feet away from her stumbling and hadn't the chance to move.
She stood after a moment of uneasy silence and once she'd stated she was okay, Kodi released the breath he'd been holding. Yen and Blu watched on in silence, curious but otherwise uncaring; humans were clumsy creatures. "Be more careful, then." He scolded, though his tone gave away that he mean't her no disrespect. "Next thing you know, you'll break a leg or something." Hands returned to his pockets after that.
"It seems as good a place as any. As long as we stay away from the hole, we should be good." He glanced down at Yen, who at that moment was returning the challenging look Elli had sent him. "You ready, Yen?" The cat looked up at his partner with a purr and trotted a few feet away, standing at the ready. Kodi followed and flanked him from behind. Blu stayed put, watching from afar.
"One on one battle. To make things interesting, loser has to buy the winner lunch. Sound fair?" That disarming smile returned tenfold, flirty and charming all at once.

April listened to Kodi’s careful scolding, and she wondered how he could be so concerned, since they had just met and all. Then again, standing someone almost falling into a hole could make anyone concerned. She looked down at Elli, who seemed ready to go, when she finally heard him talk about the loser buying lunch. As his smile returned, she couldn’t help the blush that rose to her face…was he asking her out? Well, a friendly lunch wouldn’t hurt no matter who was paying, though she was determined that it wouldn’t be her.
“Alright, sounds great to me Kodi! I passed some great places on the way out here…well; I’ve only been to some of those places once, but still…” The look on Elli’s face snapped her out of her rambling, and she realized they probably should have been battling by now. She was pumped now. With Elli all ready, she looked over at Kodi.
“Alright, well I guess we can start if you’re ready…” He must have been waiting for her to start, she supposed, but she felt nervous, excited, and scared all at once. She tried to think of the offensive moves. Though she hoped Kodi wouldn’t pick up on this, it was pretty easy to see. She turned to Elli and called out.
“A-Alirght Elli, let’s try a Leer!” Elli turned and blinked, before nodding confidently. She turned to spot Yen, and seeked out his eyes with her own, now glowing green. With any luck, this would lower his defense, but then again she knew if April was too stiffened to even use her offensive moves, then even if this did lower it, it would be of no use anyway.

Well at least she'd agreed to the 'date'. With that and the battle, Kodi felt excited, thrilled really. "Ready when you are." He replied. Yen kneeded the ground at his paws, shifting his weight as if he were about to pounce on some prey. It was obvious how anxious and ready the meowth was.
April started out with a Leer. As soon as those eyes on Elli changed color, Kodi and Yen snapped into action. The cat fumbled at the sight of the elekid's eyes but the voice of his partner snapped him back. "Yen, swerve and scratch!"
The meowth obeyed, leaping to the side and running at Elli with his claws out. He dove, aiming for her side with sharp claws. Kodi's eyes narrowed at the thought of it; he'd been scratched by Yen before. It didn't feel nice. He hated battles and this was why. Still, pokemon needed training to evolve and grow. This wouldn't scar either of them and almost all pokemon enjoyed sparring.
Nearby, in the hole, something had changed. A pair of eyes watched the young pokemon with interest, though not quite leaving the darkness of the underground. Blu, still sitting beside the hole, gave no notice. The wind was against her, leaving no trace of the thing watching the five outside.

Notes: Gonna let the battle continue for one more round, I think. I'll send Princess a PM to see what we should do next if we want a pokemon to appear.

For a moment, April hadn’t been aware of Yen’s movements until her Elekid found herself with claw marks across her side. She looked down at them, and electricity cackled at the structures on Elli’s head. April blinked, try to process what had just happened. She put a finger gently to her lips as she thought, and when she finally figured out why she felt so stung. Her gray gaze wandered to Kodi. What was she supposed to do now? Despite the fact that she was a rookie, she didn’t want to feel like one.
“Elli! Are you alright girl?” Though she looked particularly hurt, Elli gave a nod, which showed she was indeed ready to fight despite her injury. Though April knew she’d have to be careful, because a few more hits like that and Elli could go down easily. She looked at Yen’s unsheathed claws, and then turned back to Elli.
“Elli, let’s try a Quick Attack, and make sure you try your best to avoid those claws!” Once again Elli tried to move in on her target, and April felt a pang of thrill and worry in her heart, which was fluttering again, but the crack of what sounded like a twig alerted her to the hole.
“Elli, stop!” she called out, making Elli slide to a stop before she could get to Yen. She turned as April walked to the other side of the field, stopping just in front of Kodi.
‘What, do you think she’s giving up?’ Elli questioned to Yen. April cleared her throat though, and spoke a moment later.
“Kodi… something isn’t right here…” she mentioned, glancing towards what seemed to her now, to be a burrow.
